- Benigna is the maid of doña Francisca who is penniless. She makes her mistress believe that she makes money working as a cook for the town priest when the truth is she begs at the entrance of the church. Benigna also helps her daughter Francisca, married to a lazy man. Yuco, the blind beggar is in love with Benigna and becomes jealous of don Carchito the lonely man she also takes care of. Don Carchito tries to transfer his properties to Benigna but she prefers to remain a beggar a not let wealth changed her
