- Established in 1988 as the Science Book Prizes, this award has been known by several names over the years: Rhône-Poulenc Prizes for Science Books (1990-2000), Aventis Prizes for Science Books (2001-2006), Royal Society Prize for Science Books (2007-2010), and Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books (2011-2015). Regardless of sponsorship, this award has always recognized popular works of science writing that appeal to the general adult public. A related prize, the Royal Society Young People's Book Prize, is aimed at the children's/young adult audience
