- In 1965, W.L. Webb, literary editor of The Guardian , established the Guardian Fiction Prize "to recognize each year a novel of originality and promise by a British or Commonwealth writer." In 1999, the Prize was replaced by the Guardian First Book Award, which rewards new writing across multiple fiction and nonfiction genres
