Summary
Grassian (English, Nevada State College) describes the work of eight African American writers from the hip-hop generation (writers born in the 1960s and 70s), common themes in their works, and how they address issues relating to race. Writers Paul Beatty, Trey Ellis, Terrence Hayes, Allison Joseph, Jake Lamar, Suzan Lori-Parks, Danzy Senna, and Colson Whitehead are profiled, with discussion of how they address the role of literature in the community, what progress has been made since the civil rights movement, the effects of hip-hop and popular culture on African Americans, and the future of the their community. The writers were chosen because they focus on all aspects of contemporary African American life, not just the ghetto or inner-city. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
