Summary
Kidder (Ecumenical Theological Seminary) presents the writings of seven European Christians who, while acting in accordance with their religious ideals, were killed because of their work to oppose Hitler's regime. Those profiled include a conscientious objector, a pastor, a student, a novelist, and a spy. Each chapter begins with a b&w portrait photo and 5-7 pages of detailed background on the individual's education, family, and relationships, and his or her activities against the Third Reich. Excerpts from letters, diaries, sermons, and other writings show the diverse motivations that compelled Catholics and Protestants, clergy and laity.
