Summary
Thea Bowman, an African-American Catholic nun who entered a formerly all-white convent in the 1950s, became world-famous for her civil rights work and her music ministry. This accessible and inspirational biography follows her childhood, her entrance into a convent in Wisconsin, and her education, then describes her impact through public speaking, her travels to Europe, and her teaching. Her final illness was marked by joy and friendship as she was acknowledged for her work with a presidential award and a commissioned portrait. Bowman's voice is present throughout the biography with excerpts from her letters, writings, and speeches. The book includes b&w personal photos. Smith is treasurer of the Thea Bowman Black Catholic Education Foundation. Feister is founding editor of AmericanCatholic.org. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
