Review
"The accounts of the great voyages of exploration are often written as epics in which only the Europeans are real," writes Salmond (Distinguished Professor, Maori studies, Univ. of Auckland). "Consequently, it has been difficult to imagine [the voyages] as cross-cultural encounters, in which Europeans and Pacific islanders alike were historical agents." In this remarkable study of Capt. James Cook's three Pacific voyages, Salmond argues that the Europeans were transformed just as much by their contact with the Islanders as the Islanders themselves were changed. The episode of "the cannibal dog" becomes, for Salmond, the basic metaphor of the process of redefining and reshaping that went on in both cultures throughout the three voyages. Salmond's conclusion that "Polynesian as well as European thinking—the World of Light as well as the Enlightenment—played their part in James Cook's death" gives new insight into the great age of exploration; it also suggests the disquieting thought that the cross-cultural "contradictions" that enmeshed Cook and his men and, ultimately, led to the fatal incident on the beach at Ka'awaloa may have dangerous counterparts in the present century. A fascinating appendix containing the "Calendar of Punishments During Captain Cook's Three Voyages," an extensive bibliography, and 48 pages of notes contribute greatly to the impact of this study. Highly recommended.—Robert C. Jones, Warrensburg, MO --Robert C. Jones (Reviewed September 15, 2003) (Library Journal, vol 128, issue 15, p71)
