Review
  • /*Starred Review*/ Sophie lives on an enchanted mountain with her sisters, Juliet and Isadora, and all are witches, although Sophie's powers are weak. And the sisters are under a curse--whomever they fall in love with will die by the age of 30. But Sophie wants a baby, so she decides that she will just have to be careful not to fall in love with the man she chooses to father her child. Enter Kane, a wounded rebel soldier. Sophie uses what limited powers she has to cast a healing spell and seduce him; then, knowing she is with child, she sends him away. When he returns a year later and sees the infant, he insists on marriage, but Sophie knows that their love will lead to his death. Then the baby is kidnapped. Sophie and Kane must risk their lives to save the person who has become most precious to them, and amazing adventures unfold. Readers who enjoyed Nora Roberts' Three Sisters Island trilogy (Dance upon the Air, 2001; Face the Fire, 2002; Heaven and Earth, 2003) will also go for this marvelously captivating, sensuous, fast-paced adventure. -- Shelley Mosley (BookList, 12-01-2004, p641)
  • Rendezvous Review: Sophie Fyne is a witch, as are her sisters and as were her ancestors. Over 300 years ago a spurned lover cursed the Fyne witches to never know a true and lasting love. Sophie's sister Isadora learned the power of the curse firsthand. While Sophie has no plans to love or wed, she does have plans to have children, following her mother's path of choosing her own lovers. When Sophie finds Kane Varden lolling drunk under a linara tree, she chooses him as her first lover. Pregnancy helps Sophie become aware of the strength of her power and all in the cottage where she lives with her daughter and two sisters, until Kane finds her and seeks to wed her and know his child. Sophie refuses, but when her baby is kidnapped, she turns to Kane for help in finding her. This is the first book in a trilogy. The story is told in a straightforward style with few surprises. I am disappointed that while it is an enjoyable tale, well written and full of interesting characters, it did not engage my emotions. Sophie is a particularly delightful character. -- Marjorie Holme (Reviewed 11-01-2004)
