Review
The authors (U.S. history, Univ. of Sydney, Australia) have produced a fascinating book and accompanying 18-track CD compilation that brings to life the historical soundscape of 18th- and 19th-century African Americans at work, play, rest, and prayer. Sacred and secular music blend with speech and street sounds from New Orleans to New York to provide a rich landscape for rhetorical analysis and cultural study. Turning ears to living sounds culled from documentary records and from the Library of Congress's Archive of American Folk Song and Works Progress Administration interviews recorded with former slaves, the authors (who are unrelated) interpret cultural meanings and values of black life, expanding current scholarship. This remarkable achievement demands a place in every collection on African American and U.S. history and folk life. Highly recommended.—Thomas J. Davis, Arizona State Univ., Tempe --Thomas J. Davis (Reviewed March 15, 2005) (Library Journal, vol 130, issue 5, p92)
