Summary
Phelan Tierney helps people who hope to start their lives over. When a young woman he's taken under his wing disappears, the former lawyer devotes himself to finding her, despite her puzzlingly unhelpful family and his own ghosts. Jacquelina Garza has been to hell and back. Abducted and tortured by a child predator when she was eight years old, she still, years later, bears the scars of the incident and its aftermath, including a very public trial. Her teenage life takes an even steeper downward spiral when she's drawn into a murder case that threatens to tear apart her hometown of Rio Mirada, the gateway to Napa Valley's opulence. Can these two wayward souls find redemption amid the convenient lies and difficult truths that have followed them for so long?

  • /* Starred Review */ Phelan Tierney is one of the good guys, and he just wants to help 17-year-old Jacquelina Garza. Tierney, a former lawyer, works as an investigator and tutors former addicts and prostitutes, Jacqi among them. Jacqi, a media sensation when she was kidnapped nearly 10 years earlier, became a wild child and is now trying to escape her toxic family with the help of her only steady john, fireman Michael Verrazzo. Verrazzo is widely reviled as the prime mover in organizing unions that, some say, led to the city’s bankruptcy, and when he’s killed in a gang attack in Jacqi’s view, she goes on the run. Tierney puts his fairly new relationship with Cass, his late wife’s oncology nurse, at risk for what seems his obsession with Jacqi, whose secret about her kidnapping seems to be key. Corbett (Do They Know I’m Running?, 2010) handles his story line and subplots adroitly, in economical but polished prose, but his real strength is in character development; Tierney and company are so real they seem to step off the pages. Superlative hard-boiled crime fiction with a strong emotional center. -- Leber, Michele (Reviewed 04-01-2015) (Booklist, vol 111, number 15, p30)
  • At age eight, Jacquelina “Jacqi” Garza, the central character in this gripping crime novel from Edgar-finalist Corbett (Do They Know I’m Running? ), was abducted and tortured. After the child predator was caught, Jacqi was subjected to relentless media exposure in her hometown of Rio Mirada, Calif. Now 17, she escapes from the rehab facility that the authorities put her in after she assaulted a teacher and a policeman. The rehab center asks Phelan Tierney, a disgraced attorney now working as a PI, to search for Jacqi. The police are also hunting her because security cameras show she’s a witness to a murder. Pete Navarette, a career criminal involved with Jacqi’s mother, wants the girl sent away and dispatches two thugs to find her. The thugs threaten Phelan, who thereafter becomes even more determined to locate Jacqi. But if he does, it’s unclear whether she’ll accept his help. This thrilling roller-coaster ride builds to an exciting conclusion. (Apr.) --Staff (Reviewed February 16, 2015) (Publishers Weekly, vol 262, issue 07, p)
  • Ten years after her childhood escape from a homicidal rapist, a star-crossed teenager is in deep trouble once more.Maybe that should be "even deeper trouble," since Jacqueline Garza has never been trouble-free since the day she chewed through her bonds and ran away from the isolated cabin where cab driver Victor Cope was keeping her and another girl captive. Jacqi's father is in prison. She's never gotten along with her useless mother, Nina, or her older brother, Richie, back in Rio Mirada, California. And she hasn't exactly bonded with Lonnie Bachmann, who runs the rehab center for prostitutes where she's been staying. When Jacqi takes off again, Lonnie calls her friend Phelan Tierney, an ex-lawyer who's been tutoring the girl, in the hope that he can find her and persuade her to return. But Jacqi's resumed her life on the streets, pinning her future hopes on the closest thing to a friend in her life: Michael Verrazzo, the widely reviled former head of the firefighters' union, the repeat client who's asked her to come away with him. The pair has barely climbed into his car when Verrazzo is killed under the eyes of Jacqi and dozens of other kids from the neighborhood. Since none of the witnesses will stick around long enough to be identified, much less testify, Detective Jordan Skellenger, who first met Jacqi after her more successful escape 10 years ago, seeks her again under even more menacing circumstances. Corbett (Blood of Paradise, 2007, etc.) doesn't stint on either narrative or psychological complications, and readers who can stick with Jacqi and Tierney and Skellenger will feel that they've been expertly put through a particularly foul-smelling wringer.(Kirkus Reviews, February 1, 2015)
