Summary
From the outside, Mill River looks like any sleepy little Vermont town where everyone knows everyone and people never need to lock their doors. There are newcomers for whom this appeals, from police officer Kyle Hansen and his daughter Rowen, who are starting over after heartache, to Claudia Simon, the schoolteacher who is determined to reinvent herself. But on closer inspection, there are those in Mill River--including a stealthy arsonist, a covetous nurse, and a pilfering priest--who have things they wish to hide. None more than the widow Mary McAllister, who for the past sixty years has secluded herself in her marble mansion overlooking the town. Most of the residents have never even seen the peculiar woman. Only the priest, Father O'Brien, knows the deep secrets that keep Mary isolated--and that, once revealed, will forever change the community

Review
When Mary McAllister dies, she leaves behind an empty marble mansion and a lot of questions about her mysterious life. She married young to a cruel, drinking man who wrapped himself conveniently around a tree before their first anniversary but not before beating Mary so badly she loses an eye. Her disfigurement only intensifies her social anxiety, and she cannot stand the company of anyone but Father Michael O’Brien, the spoon-stealing priest who watches over her and the rest of her small Vermont town. As the narrative switches between Mary’s life and the present day, Kyle, a widowed police officer, starts a romance with a formerly obese teacher while his daughter adopts the Widow McAllister’s cat. Meanwhile, Kyle’s partner, mustache-twirling Leroy, plots a revenge that literally blows up in his face. The two time lines converge at a town-hall meeting, where Father O’Brien reveals the details of Mary’s will. The Mill River Recluse, an e-book best-seller, is now in print for the first time. Introduce it to readers of Jennifer Chiaverini, then be prepared to order the next one in the series. -- Maguire, Susan (Reviewed 08-01-2014) (Booklist, vol 110, number 22)
