- Summary
- Crowe (history, Elon University) takes a fresh look at the Holocaust, beginning with a detailed overview of the history of the Jews, their 2,000-year struggle with the larger Christian world, and the historical forces that paved the way for the Holocaust. He then analyzes the origins and evolution of various German policies and attitudes not only toward the Jews, but also toward the Roma (Gypsies), the handicapped, and other groups deemed racial or biological threats. He discusses the spread of these policies in Germany and the rest of Europe, and concludes with a detailed discussion of liberation, displaced persons, the founding of Israel, war crimes trials, and continuing international efforts to bring Nazi war criminals to justice. Numerous b&w historical photos are included, many from the collection of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. The book is for general readers and students in high school and up. Crowe has served on the education committee of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
