Review
  • Hannah Baker is determined to have the last word--but she doesn't get it. Before committing suicide, she sends a tape of 13 joined stories to those who she believes were instrumental in her death. One of the recipients is Clay Jenkins, who once had a crush on Hannah; he would have helped her if he could and listens brokenhearted. The novel makes a perfect transformation to audio. Debra Wiseman narrates Hannah's story with a blend of dispassion, disgust, and defeat. Joel Johnstone portrays the grieving Clay, who chimes in uncertainly from time to time to protest Hannah's words, his comments marked with desperation. The interplay of the two is perfectly choreographed in this powerful audio. S.W. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
  • Grades 8-11 Asher’s debut novel lends itself particularly well to audio since the book involves teenager Clay Jenson listening to the recorded voice of classmate Hannah Baker detailing circumstances that led to her suicide. The readings are divided between Johnstone as Clay and Wiseman as Hannah. The dual narration preserves the back-and-forth rhythm of the book’s narrative. Johnstone seesaws between the teen’s sad bewilderment and righteous, sputtering anger over Hannah’s decision to kill herself. Wiseman is smart mouthed, feisty, and taunting. If that doesn’t seem quite the right tone for a teen determined to off herself, it may be more a product of Asher’s story—which never really touches upon Hannah’s supposed vulnerability—rather than Wiseman’s reading skills. Some listeners may find the melodrama a bit tiring and off-putting; however, the message about treating others kindly is worthy. -- Cruze, Karen (Reviewed 3/1/2008) (Booklist, vol 01, number 13, p78)
  • Gr 9 Up –With the arrival of a box of numbered audiocassettes, Clay Jensen’s life changes forever. Listening and reacting to the words of fellow classmate and crush Hannah Baker, Clay begins to understand and to feel the depth of the pain, anger, and confusion that led to her suicide. With each recorded story, Hannah systematically lays bare the cruelty and deception of the 13 people whose actions she implicates in her decision to end her life. Alternating between Hannah’s and Clay’s voices, narrators Debra Wiseman and Joel Johnstone zero in on the indecision, angst, and desperate hunger for acceptance experienced by young adults struggling to find their place in the world. There are no heroes in this novel (Razorbill, 2007) by Jay Asher, and each character, including Hannah, is guilty of making poor choices. The pace of the story and the constant tension of wondering what will happen next make this an “edge of the seat” listening experience whose unanswered questions provide much food for thought and discussion.–Cindy Lombardo, Cleveland Public Library, OH --Cindy Lombardo (Reviewed February 1, 2008) (School Library Journal, vol 54, issue 2, p67)
