Summary
The stories of some 400 men and women who, though they experienced the war in widely different ways, were all profoundly affected by it
Summary
Based on interviews and oral histories, Culpepper's (Michigan State U.) text offers reflections on the personal side of WWII from some 400 men and women who experienced the conflict in various ways. Among those whose comments are included in the text are male and female veterans; civilians back at home; conscientious objectors; survivors of the torpedoing of the USS Indianapolis and of typhoons; POWs of the Germans and Japanese; displaced Nisei; and participants in the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. All provide glimpses of a world at war and the changes that profoundly transformed people and the world they lived in. Academic but accessible to the general reader.
