Summary
San Francisco historian Richards has mined the archives of the city for this entertaining story of one momentous year in California history. In 1849, the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill initiated a wild free-for-all in the city; civic order began to be restored by the start of 1850. Characters of this drama include many of the town fathers, men such as Geary, Larkin and Mason; and there are also military men like John C. Fremont and a young William T. Sherman. But the real forces in the story are the thousands of people who poured in from all over the world: adventurers determined to get rich quick and return home, and others who made a living from the large numbers of men living on their own, including prostitutes, cooks, launderers and saloon keepers. In a breezy narrative style, Richards treats each in turn, along with those who strove to establish order in a town suddenly gone mad. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
