Review
  • PreS In a frenetically busy barnyard, the rambunctious livestock run wild, give chase, buck, and play tug-of-war with the brightly clad members of a farm family. Each spread features one kind of animal with simple text declaring its signature sound: "Cows say moo, moo, moo." The din and the activity build until all of the animals join together in a chorus of noise. In response, the final page shows a mother with her sleeping baby and reads, "Mommies say shhh, shhh, shhh. And bunnies say nothing at all." The text is standard animal-noise fare, but the inclusion of the silent bunnies is a clever twist. One variation that may confuse some children is that the dogs say "buff, buff, buff." Polacco's highly recognizable pencil-and-watercolor illustrations are full of life, with much to discover in repeated readings.--Rachel G. Payne, Brooklyn Public Library, NY--Rachel G. Payne (Reviewed March 1, 2005) (School Library Journal, vol 51, issue 3, p186)
  • Polacco takes readers back to the land of the busy, barefoot and babushka-clad villagers last visited in Oh, Look!, although this time the results are less satisfying. A passel of children gambols through rolling farmland, delighting in the distinctive sounds of woodland and farm animals. Most of the encounters have a soupçon of magic in them. A boy goes nose to nose with a squirrel on a branch ("Squirrels say Chee, chee, chee"); a group of industrious girls find they can pull knitting yarn right out of a sheep's coat ("Sheep say baa, baa, baa"). Given all this racket, the fact that "bunnies say nothing at all" seems quite remarkable; in fact, Polacco turns that observation into a kind of counterpoint refrain ("Geese say honk, honk, honk./ Bunnies say nothing at all"). And where do mommies fit into this picture? They make a pretty impressive sound, too--especially when noisy animals might wake up a sleeping baby. Once again, Polacco does a beautiful job of visually presenting her world--readers may well embrace her radiant renderings and happy-go-lucky familiar characters. But in spite of all the energy expended within the pages (Polacco loves to show people and animals running hither and yon in full stride), readers may miss her usual narrative momentum. Though wonderfully realized, the pictures feel more like set pieces than images that build on one another. Ages 3-up. (Feb.)--Staff (Reviewed February 7, 2005) (Publishers Weekly, vol 252, issue 6, p58)
  • Animal sounds abound, and brightly clad, barefoot boys and girls frolic with friendly livestock in one of the author's simpler salutes to her farmstead childhood. "Birds say cheep cheep cheep. Squirrels say chee, chee, chee. Bunnies say nothing at all." Polacco's pictures, a colorful and cozily familiar mix of marker, paint, pencil, and pastel, play perfectly with teeter-tottering pigs and muffler-wearing moo-cows making merry in the barnyard. In a penultimate spread that may put readers in mind of the musicians of Bremen, the animals come together in a chorus of clucks, honks, quacks, moos, ma-a-a-s, and meows, and with a well-timed final page-turn, are hushed by a baby-rocking Mommy who says "shhh, shhh, shhh." ("And bunnies say nothing at all.") Big and ebullient, inviting participation and prediction, this one's a natural for storytime. (Picture book. 3-5) (Kirkus Reviews, January 15, 2005)
