- After his wife leaves him, John Franklin moves with his fifteen-year-old son, Thomas, to the remote northern Canadian town of Houndstitch, where he deals with her disappearance by writing poetry and escaping into an affair, while Thomas, who believes himself to be a direct descendant of the British explorer Sir John Franklin, withdraws into a dangerous fantasy recreation of the infamous Victorian-era Arctic expedition.
