Summary
"Rookie patrol officer Rose Brighton chases a suspect down an alley. Without warning, her vision wavers, and the lone suspect appears to divide into two men--the real suspect, frozen in time, and a shadow version with a gun. Confused by what she's just seen, but with no time to second guess it's meaning, Rose shoots the real suspect in the back. Forced to lie to detectives, she risks her job and her life to discover the shocking truth of who she really is--a witch of an ancient House, the prey of one powerful enemy, and the pawn of another."--Page [4] of cover

Review
  • The life of Birmingham, Ala., rookie cop Rose Brighton, the narrator of this promising paranormal series launch from Thorne (Noah’s Wife), veers into the extraordinary one night when she and her partner, Paul Nix, are called to apprehend a burglary suspect. What happens after Rose follows the suspect down a dark alley challenges everything she thought she knew about reality. As the burglar stops and stares in her direction, a “smudgy version of him peels away and turns toward the alley’s end,” where Paul is supposed to block his escape. Rose sees the shadow version of the burglar fatally shoot Paul as he gets out of his patrol car. Instantly, she’s pulled back to the moment before, and, knowing what will happen, she shoots the suspect, thus saving Paul. Her subsequent investigations unearth links to her past, and she discovers that she’s part of a dynasty of witches who settled in Birmingham generations ago and that her life is under threat. Thorne, a retired captain in the Birmingham PD, grounds the fantasy with authentic procedural details and loving descriptions of the city and its lore. Readers will look forward to Rose’s further adventures. Agent: Kimberley Cameron, Kimberley Cameron & Assoc. (Nov.)

  • DEBUT Rookie police officer Rose Brighton is chasing a suspect on a routine burglary call when her life suddenly changes: time stops and she sees the future in which the suspect shoots her partner Paul, leading Rose to kill the culprit and save Paul's life. Confused, she revisits the crime scene, where she's drawn to a rose pendant the suspect threw into the bushes. Attempting to return the object, she meets her long-lost Aunt Alice, who tells her she's a witch of the House of Rose and warns that warlocks from the House of Iron will do anything to obtain the pendant. The House of Iron continuously attempts to murder Rose and regain the pendant, but her police background and foresight keep her alive. As her detective work leads her to new information, the mystery around the witches of her house deepens. Former police captain Thorne delivers a promising debut, making the police procedural aspects believable and intriguing. Though the resolution feels rushed, as a whole this is a nice mix of mystery and fantasy that leaves the door open for more series installments. VERDICT Purchase where real world-meets-fantasy titles are in demand. --Brooke Bolton (Reviewed 10/15/2018) (Library Journal, vol 143, issue 17, p46)
