Summary
Shomette presents a revised and expanded edition of a text originally published as Flotilla: Battle for the Patuxent (1981, Calvert Marine Museum Press). The author documents the campaign of the Chesapeake Flotilla, led by Capt. Joshua Barney, against the invading British Royal Navy on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River, and the influence of that campaign on the War of 1812 and ultimately American history itself. A marine archaeologist, cultural resource manager, and author based in Dunkirk, Maryland, Shomette directed an excavation of the flotilla's flagship in the mid-1990s. For the updated edition, the author has incorporated important historical information about Barney, his crew, and fleet of vessels that has become available since publication of the 1981 text.
