Summary
"A close examination of the five African American soldiers in John Brown's army and the raid on Harpers Ferry"--
Summary
On October 16, 1859, John Brown and his integreted band of raiders descended on Harpers Ferry attempting to incite a slave insurrection; they seized the federal arsenal, took hostages, and retreated to a fire engine house where they barricaded themselves until soldiers forced their way in two days later. One of the few survivors later published an insider account of the event that was a catalyst to the catastrophic American Civil War that followed
