Review
  • Anthony's Xanth novels now seem past counting and for some people past enduring. In the latest, young satyr Forrest Faun and some companions (two princesses and a daymare) explore a miniature world called Ptezo, which is discovered in orbit around the head of Princess Ida of Castle Roogna. Ptezo is a microcosm of Xanth, containing Xanth's entire past as well as present, and the book about it is rather an episodic guided tour of the history of Anthony's famous creation. Anthony admits incorporating many suggestions from Xanth's loyal readership into this book, perhaps, unfortunately, to the point where the book might fittingly be called a committee effort. Even if he was as much collator as creator, though, long-standing Xanth fans will be pleased, and the abundance of them will keep Faun & Games circulating industriously. Newcomers should be strongly advised to start elsewhere. ((Reviewed Sept. 1, 1997)) -- Roland Green
  • As is customary in his Xanth series (of which this is the 21st installment, following Yon Ill Wind, 1996), Anthony once again pours on the puns as he works a multitude of readers' "notions," suggested to him by mail, into the plot. Forrest Faun is appalled to discover that his best friend and fellow faun, Branch, has tripped and fallen into the Void, never to return. Who will care for Branch's tree, giving it the magic it needs to keep it from becoming mundane? To find out, Forrest must undertake a lengthy quest to Ptero, a world in the shape of a miniature moon orbiting the head of Princess Ida of Castle Roogna. It is a magical land where everything in Xanth that is, ever was or might be exists simultaneously. Forrest and his cohort--a "day mare" named Imbri, and the precocious princesses Dawn and Eve--travel across Ptero, bouncing from one outrageous situation to another. With plenty of the spry characters and cheerful wordplay for which Anthony's works are known, this new Xanth tale should, like its predecessors, manage to wiggle its way onto the bestseller lists. (Oct.)
  • What can a hapless reviewer possibly find to say about Anthony's Xanth yarns--here the 21st of that ilk--that hasn't been said before? Astonishing as it may seem, Anthony has found the present puns-and-anything-goes format too restrictive, so he's introduced a miniature planet called Ptero that contains (wait for this) everything in Xanth that is or ever could be! The future sure won't have been what it used to be. So: evidently, nothing much--but stay tuned for next year's adventure (according to reports from Ptero, it'll be about zombies). And, meantime, in the author's afterword, you can catch up on the latest news about Anthony's teeth. (Kirkus Reviews, September 15, 1997)
