Summary
There are more than 100,000 industrially produced chemicals in our environment, and many of them have received little or no testing for toxicity. Most of us have no idea what they are, but they could affect life on earth for generations to come. Monosson, environmental toxicologist, writer, and consultant, takes a big step back and looks at the issue from the perspective of the history of life to help determine what the effects of those toxics will be. By examining evolutionary history, she writes of how life has reacted to things like UV radiation, oxygen, and metals--and how life evolved to be able to handle the first, depend on the second, and take advantage of the third. The author also delves into specific concerns of today to explain what is known, not known, and how we might learn more about how our bodies respond to chemical threats in the future.
