Summary
Boundaries--lines imposed on the landscape--shape our lives, dictating everything from which candidates we vote for to what schools our children attend to the communities with which we identify. In "Creating the American West," historian Derek Everett examines the function of these internal lines in American history generally and in the West in particular. Drawing lines to create states in the trans-Mississippi West, he points out, imposed a specific form of political organization that made the West truly American
Summary
Defining state lines has often been politically complicated and fractious. Author Everett's history of how boundaries were drawn between states west of the Mississippi outlines the varied competing interests, the importance of geography, and the sometimes interminable debates at various levels of government. The author takes a hard look at the issue of slavery as a formative element in creating lines between the North and South. He analyzes the complexities of numerous local boundary contests, which often prefigured or led to resolutions at the national level. A theme throughout the book is the nationwide debate as to whether geography or geometry should determine boundaries, which arose again and again as one boundary dispute after another heated up. Everett brings this history into the present by demonstrating how these old issues continue to complicate water rights, taxation, representation and immigration.
