Summary
Cosmo the dog discovers a special talent when he accidentally takes a nap on a skateboard
Review
  • Books for Youth, For the Young: Ages 3-7. All the dogs on Pumpkin Lane are good at something, whether it's running, howling, catching a Frisbee, herding, or drooling. Unfortunately, Cosmo, a black-and-white pooch reminiscent of Gene Zion's Harry the Dirty Dog, has some trouble finding his niche. After settling down for a nap one day and noticing the scenery around him flying by, he discovers that he is lying on a moving skateboard. He continues careening downward until the inevitable crash (into the hydrangeas) in front of all his impressed pals. Howard has clearly spent time noting canine behavior, and young children are sure to identify with Cosmo's insecurities and eventual success. The watercolor, gouache, and pencil illustrations pick up the story's subtle humor, and the succinct text ensures popularity for story hours. Pair this with Robert Kraus' Leo the Late Bloomer (1971), another portrayal of delayed success. ((Reviewed November 1, 1999)) -- Kay Weisman
  • PreS-Gr 1 Howard demonstrates that simplicity is indeed elegant. Not that the dog named Cosmo is especially elegant quite the opposite but his story is told so straightforwardly, and with such expressive illustrations, that the book completely satisfies. There is nothing special about Cosmo, especially compared to the other dogs that have wonderful and arcane skills such as howling, catching Frisbees, or "drool[ing] eleven hours in a row without stopping." Quite by accident, and to his great surprise, this engaging protagonist discovers that he can skateboard! And so his problem is solved. The watercolor-and-marker illustrations convey action and emotion and have great child appeal. The rhythm of the storytelling and size of the pictures make this appropriate for storytime. Countless books address the issue of building self-esteem by conquering new skills, but few as joyfully as when Cosmo Zooms.
