Review
Food writer Elton (Locavore: From Farmers' Fields to Rooftop Gardens; How Canadians Are Changing the Way We Eat ) tackles a well-covered topic of late: the rise in popularity of local food movements. She addresses this trend in light of the impending crisis of global warming coupled with increased population growth. How can we harness the power of sustainable agriculture to combat a bleak future? In Elton's words, "The future of food is not sound-bite friendly." She breaks it down for readers by employing a three-pronged approach: focusing on the need to preserve land for future farming efforts, explaining the importance of maintaining genetic diversity through seeds, and arguing for the need to shift the way we view the food we eat. Peppering her account with anecdotes from small-scale farmers from Europe, India, China, Canada, and the United States, Elton contends that sustainable agriculture is taking root across the world. Industrialized agriculture is not favorable in Elton's estimation, but she does allow that scientific advancements have a place in addressing global food scarcity and security issues. VERDICT Elton's book belongs alongside Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma and Michael Carolan's The Real Cost of Cheap Food . Foodies, farmers, and proponents of local food will enjoy this well-written and engaging work.— Diana Hartle, Univ. of Georgia Science Lib., Athens --Diana Hartle (Reviewed August 1, 2013) (Library Journal, vol 138, issue 14, p112)
