Summary
Author Lauveng, now a clinical psychologist in Norway, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for the first time at age 17 and was hospitalized and institutionalized for schizophrenia off and on for a period of 10 years. In this memoir for general readers, patients, families, professionals, and students, she describes her symptoms and suffering, and her eventual full recovery, including cessation of all medications. Noting the sometimes callous treatment she received from medical professionals, she questions how people with mental illness are perceived and treated. The book is translated by Stine Skarpnes Østtveit. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
